Suttons is generally reliable if you follow the packet.... they don't like getting too hot and keeping the moisture content right can be a bit of a pest.....

Have you tried just buying a load of spent mushroom compost, spread it where your winter brassicas will go with a layer of manure on top with some soil on top of that?..... A friend of my Dad's did that (jsut cos SMC is limey and good for cabbages etc) and he ended up with more mushrooms than he knew what to do with......

The kits can be a bit tricky to keep the moiseture content right on, a dustbin of 2 year old manure, a pack of Suttons Spawn and a shady spot to stand it in, take the lid off and water every now and again and make sure there are a few aeration holes in it (and draninage of some description..... they don't like getting too hot and they don't like drying out ....

One other thing that causes a lot of upset - don't use fresh tap water for the watering, the chlorine kills the mycium.

Good point.... rainwater from the butt I guess unsoftened water run through a filter that strips the chlorine might do in a pinch......
