What is this?

Does anyone know what this is please? I found a few of them on my allotment today. They are about 6-8'' tall and look like spears. They are sturdy but if you stand on them they don't break, they just bend. They are well anchored into the ground.

I'm assuming that they're weeds, but what kind?

I think they may be aroids of some kind, maybe arum lily (Lords and Ladies) but the image is not clear enough to be sure.

It's one of the willow herbs - Epilobium species.  I get it on my plots and in the garden.  Just weed it out.

Woops - only just noticed the tall stalk - forget my ID - that's for the small rosette forming plants.  Not sure on this one.

I can't see a photobucket icon or an image but based on the description and that they're flowering now, could it be horsetail?  I pulled one up today, very odd thing!

Looks like a tree sapling to me.  Maple or Chestnut?

Gets my vote......... or whatever the wild plant that got bred into asparagus .... do you live near the sea (from memory that's where asparagus came from)

Yes, we do have mature trees nearby.

It looks a bit like an Ash tree, smooth grey bark and black terminal bud.

Hi, JO9919,

It certainly looks like an ash seedling. Check nearby mature trees for similar buds. Clear soil from around the roots of one - you will probably find roots linked to another shoot, and  then on to the next shoot. Dig them out now; they just get bigger and tougher to clear later. It's taken two years to clear an extra strip of plot I took on, and it's an ongoing battle!!  Good Luck!

Yes, dig the blighter out sharpish. We are dealing with a forest of the blooming things on OH and son's plot they are clearing...we even set a bonfire on top of some chopped down trunks and they didn't burn through! No option but to try and dig them out.... ::)

Yes, it seems that they are tree seedlings. They're well anchored in the ground but I can get them out easy enough.
