How Britain Got the Gardening Bug

Just watched this on BBC4 and found it quite interesting, a bit better than the usual rubbish on TV but perhaps I find gardening more interesting than some people.  Anyone else watch it.  Allotments really seem to be the in thing but when I got mine 5/6 years ago it wasn't so popular and had loads of vacant sites and everyone was quite amazed that I really, really wanted one. I retired at 60 so needed something to occupy me and it was the best thing I ever did, although I admit my allotment is a bit of a mess and I just plant willy nilly but love it and every day it gets a little bit better.  The people are great, just have a few brief chats and then get on with digging.  Must admit I enjoy the picking/harvesting a lot better than the digging/weeding bit and if my veg fails often go home with gifts from the other allotment holders whose crops have done better than mine but some of them have over 40 years of experience so I am a newcomer.  If I offer anything in return they tell me they have plenty but I do like to return a favour.  I am most appreciative of all their help.

I saw it.  I laughed at Germaine Greer's description of the giant veg. growers as 'size queens'!  Reminded me of a certain poster here.  ;)
