Its a bit out of my depth there sid. I grow beetroot to eat, and that's it. If you have a vegetable show near you, do you know any of the people that show veg, or any of the judges, maybe best to ask around to see what they look for in a handsome beetroot ;D best of luck with it though

Size of a tennis ball & try not to damage root extension is the advice we were given. I am no expert, but some of the experienced people on our site earth up around beetroots to stop them drying out and having brown patches on.

I think you can soak them in salty water after picking to make the flesh bright red, but don't quote me on that one!
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

A lot depends upon what it asks for in the schedule.

For instance some will ask for washed as grown;

This means you show them with leaves and roots in tact similar to this picture;

So you are looking for leaves that are healthy and intact. Yellow and eaten leaves should be removed.

But even with this there is an art in it i.e. doing it without the judge knowing you have done it .........meaning keep leaf stumps to a minimum they are a dead give away.

Another version is tops cut to 3" as seen here;

Finally the one you cant plan for and that is when they ask for one to be cut

This is so the judge can look at the rings to see if your plants have been grown well.  i.e. all rings to have similar/equal spacings. A series of large and small rings tells the judge you didn't water them properly.

In the end a lot depends upon the quality of the show is it to NVA rules or just a local show.
