South Korean Daewoo Logistic has secured the use of 1.3 million hectares of land for 99 years - over half of the cultivable land on all of Madagascar! It plans to use the land for the cultivation of corn and palm oil to export back to South Korea.

This is something that is happening all over the world - large multinationals buying up vast amounts of land from corrupt governments in poor countries, pushing small farmers off land that has belonged to them for generations. Deja vu? This has echos for me of what happened in this country in the 17th century with the enclosure acts and clearances - small farmers forced off common land and forced to work for the new landowners rather than producing food for themselves and their communities.

You can read an article about it here. There's also a link to a petition - it's in French but it isn't difficult to figure out how to sign it.
