I've googled until I'm blue in the face looking for the F1 Brussels sprout variety Icarus. First page I came to was T&M so I thought "How hard was that" until I clicked the name in the list and when the page opened it said... "Sorry that page is no longer found in our database".

I've heard Terry Walton (The Big Dig) say that they produce good solid sprouts even in light soil and he said he had trouble getting them. All my sprouts have blown this year and I put it down partly to the fact I can't get my soil as hard as they like it.

Does anyone know where I can get some please. I'd love to grow a decent sprout.

I hate it when some one can not find something and have just done a google too and have also failed. I suppose that the variety could be obsolete. However another variety, called Camelot has, it seems, tight buttons.

I have been asking my gardening friends from the old school. Who suggest an additive to use on sprouts which is cheap enough and you may like to give it a try.

After planting your sprouts, (what ever variety) once a week. Take your watering can into the shed and pee in it. Top it up with water and pour the diluted mix round the sprout roots. Not over the tops, just around the roots. It has to be boy pee, girl pee does not have enough ammonia in it.

I have had some daft ideas from this lot in the past. Like saving all years newspapers and making a trench in November then filling it with the newspapers and planting onions on top of the trench in Spring.

Sour milk mixed in with water on cauliflowers to get pure white centres.

A dash of lemon juice in the water when you plant seeds was another.

It could all be nonsense and then may be not, as far as I can see, none will do harm.

Thanks PH for trying. I'm always peeing in my watering can but I usually pour it over my compost heap.

Shame about the boy girl thing though. The thought of getting all the women on the site to squat amongst my brussels conjures up all manor of strange images in the mind  :o

I'll have to get the kids to play cricket on the bed I'm going to plant them in.

PLOT69
Icarus have disappeared off the market, I grew them for four years, brilliant sprouts but like all things nowadays something new hits the market and old faithfuls are dropped.
