Gallant soldier is Galinsoga parviflora. You will be glad to know that it is an annual, so if you pull it up before itcan set seed you will eventually get rid of it, unless of course the seeds are coming in from an external source in which case, all you can do it hoe, hoe hoe!

A herbicide will kill it but it is a late germinating weed and it may only appear when you already have crops or surrounding plants actively growing. It is a prolific seed producer, as you probably know already, with the seedlings producing a very fine mat of roots that, if you wait until they are big enough to pull up, could well result in you pulling up crop plants too. As Palustris advises, hoeing is the best way. Do it as soon as the seedlings emerge and frequently thereafter.

Could try mulching and planting through the mulch, perhaps?

If you do go for mulching then remember thatthe thicker the mulch the more effective it is, at least 2 inches as a minimum to stop weed seed germination. Best of luck whatever!

You have my sympathies!
the wife and I took over a plot in much the same condition, we`re nearing the end of our 1`st year, and I`ve been almost forced to use Glyphosate based products to destroy them, we`de dug the entire plot over 2 times, and still there`s no end :(

so now I`m nuking them with Glyphoste and then using a flamethrower to get rid of any seeds.

then we might have to heart to dig it all over AGAIN.

good luck to you :)
say it with Flowers... Give her a Triffid :)

trucker_al

thanks once again this is an astablished plot so nukeing them is out of order. looking this pest up on the net we could have got them to start with from potting compost SO BEWARE :'(
