Hi

I bought 2 water butts ( in fact very large plastic containers from a jam making firm) only got around to using one. I was watching gardeners world and he used a wheelbarrow to make a wormary.

I was thinking of using my spare container to do the same thing for my leaf mould.

The butt has a lid and a tap at the bottom, i can add some polystrine to to bottom to allow the liquid to fall and i can use this as a feed. Do you think this would work?

Sounds perfect to me, Cam... Our little one it took a few goes to get started - I kept adding too much stuff & it killed all the worms. Do you plan to top it up as you go along?

Sounds good. I get lots of juice out of mine and it makes a good plant food (diluted 1:10). Also get lots of very rich compost. You need to make sure the worms don't drown, so permeable polystyrene in the bottom is a good idea.  Adding cardboard and shredded paper also helps to absorb excess moisture and sweeten the mix.  You need to avoid too many things that are very acidic - especially citrus peel.  You probably know all this already!

thanks guys

I was thinking of drilling holes around it and yes layers of cardboard though it :) idealy I want to fill it 1/3 after the winter and then top it up every month.

Put four house bricks in the bottom and then put wire mesh over. put your cardboard over that. The first one i made all the worms drowned.
Makes the best liquid feed. ratio 10 to 1.

Here's a picture of some "worm tea" shrouded in bonfire smoke. It doesn't take long to get this much from the wormery. (If you look closely you can see a Northern Line train going by in the background).[attachment=1]
