I have no experience of growing these so on a learning curve at the moment,I have big hopes of this one as the others are still very small and I do not think they will come to much before the end of the season.
Anybody else grown these, and any advice?

I grow them  only for decoration only which is what they are classified as, they come in mini and normal size.

They are beautiful to look at, Green and orange  with a top like a cottage loaf.

Flavour is poor. I have seen them sold as an edible squash, of course it is edible but few folks actually eat it. Good keepers.

Long growing season.

The one pictured will change completelt in colour when it matures.

Thanks for the advice Jeannine. :)

I must admit I grew them purely because of their wonderful appearance.

The others are so tiny I do not think they will have time to mature.

I had three off one plant last year. Unfortunately I dodn't know they were not so good for eating - I cooked one and gave one to my mum & dad - none of us were impressed. The third is still in the conservatory and should see its second hallowe'en as a decoration.

End result. :)

truth is turks turban is quite edible but you need to treat them as a winter squash not summer.
You need to properly separate the edible part from the hard parts.
I will have to look in one of my very old squash cookery books for a recipe and will post it when I get chance.

Oh heck,I can,t eat this baby,my one and only success. She sits on my window sill and looks very cheerful ;D

Jeannine

Betula, it is of course edible, but there is no flavour to this one at all and it is fibrous, take my advice and don't even try. I guess is someone was starving it would be great but to me and most folks who grow a lot of squash it is terrible whatever you do with it. As a decoration it will last 2 years and the colours will change and change. It will give you a lot of pleasure.

By the way, it comes as a mini one now too.

jeannine I have never found Turks turban to be low fiber but as for taste many squash are as flavorless

Jeannine

By fibrous, I mean it has  high fibre  .. not low fibre.XX Jeannine
