I have some plants that need planting out - can I plant them under my apple trees ?

However if I do how would I mulch in future or could I use fertilizer ?

I've been growing alpine strawberries from seed to plant under my apple tree.  It was Bob Flowerdew's suggestion when I asked what to plant under fruit trees and bushes on Gardeners' Question Time.

I suppose you could mulch in the winter when there is no foliage on the strawbs.  I mulch my normal strawbs after I cut the foliage down in the autumn.  Don't see any problem fertilising.

I have wild strawberriesin my garden and their foliage does not seem to die down in winter. In fact my garden is being over run with them but at least they keep the weeds down and the fruit, tiny as it is, is just to die for.

Sorry, didn't mean it died down.  I meant to cut the foliage down to encourage fruiting.

there were wild strawberries in my old allotment - delicious. I miss them - and the whole allotment!

They grew naturally under a tree, and did very well - so I suppose they would like it under an apple tree.

have you tried dipping the little fruits in melted chocolate?

i'm not a big chocolate fan - to me that would spoil a good strawberry!
