Dendrobium Care

Last Autumn, I bought a Dendrobium in flower and. when it had finished, I cut back  the flower stems  and have kept it going over the winter.

The flowers came from the tops of the two taller growths and you can see the dead wood still.

I haven't a clue how to look after it and am wondering if I should cut the previously flowering stems down.  You can see two new stems shooting from the bottom which look quite healthy.

I manage to get the ordinary Moth Orchids to flower again, but I just don't know about this type at all.

Can anyone help, please?

I'm no expert but have a couple of dendrobiums.  The stems I believe act as a bit of a storage organ so I wouldn't cut them down.  Uour plant looks really healthy so I'd just carry on doing what you're doing in terms of watering and be patient.  I'm sure someone else will be along to give you more definite advice.

Incidentally I had a small dendrobium that used to flower for me once a year but seemed to have outgrown it's pot so I re-potted it and it now doesn't look happy at all and hasn't flowered for a couple of years...wondering whether maybe I should pot it back into a smaller container?

Good luck

Thanks very much SP.

As you say, some things are best left alone and without actually knowing if that is the right thing to do I erred on the side of caution.

I'm very much hoping it flowers again this year.

Thanks again
