Bored with normal races, where the pigeons are taken somewhere far away and race to see who is first home, pigeon fanciers have designed new "slalom" courses in the style of skiing or canoe races. Unable to make the pigeons go round plastic flags, they instead use artificial owls to create the course?

I'd have thought something which cast an owl-shaped shadow was more effective (or something that was owl shaped in 3-d, rather than a flat bit of wood?)

No, the 3 small ones are Eagle owl chicks.....yes they are!.....and the large one is mum.

The chap on the plot next to (pigeon Al)me put them up after a few of this years Young birds became dinner for a sparrow hawk, apparently they don't like Eagle owls,and it seems to work plus it keeps the wood pigeons off my peas....so now ya know what baby owls look like. ::) ;D ;D ;D
