Can anybody help me with growing standard fuschias please?

I have no problem propagating fuschias but want to grow my own standards.   The problem I have is how to keep the stems of the standards straight.   So far every standard I have attempted has gone wonky.  I experimented with a couple by supporting them with two small canes tied to either side of the stem but with no success.

Any advice gratefully received.

The best way I have found is to grow them in shade.

I put mine under the greenhouse bench and they stretch quite rapidly.

I leave them in this manner until they get to the desired height.

I also find it is best to cane them as well

What varieties are you trying to grow as standards?

If you try to grow a trailing variety, they will be difficult to keep upright, but with perseverance could make a lovely 'weeping' standard.

Bush varieties are obviously easier because of their natural upright growth.
