I have strawberries planted through black membrane so there is nowhere for the runners to attach themselves to the soil. Ive got a couple of questions about how to cultivate the runners -
When should I disconnect them from the plants?
Can I then put them on soil in seed tray or in pots?
If I can grow them in trays/pots how do I pot them up? Do I just leave them on the surface or bury part of them?
How long will they be ok in trays/pots before needing planting out into permanenet spot?
Thanks for any advice

Fork

Fill some small pots with compost. You can then put your runners(still attached to the main plant)in the pots and hold them in place with a paper clip or something similiar.

Keep checking and when the runners have rooted you can remove them from the main plant.
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

Thanks so much for this advice I would never have thought to keep the runner attached to the main plant

Baaaaaaaa

I potted my runners (still attached to the mother plant) in Sept. into 3.5 inch pots.
I used fairly thick gauge wire bent into a hoop to hold the runners in place in the pot while the root.

No more than 3 runners to a mother plant otherwise the mother plant will be too stressed.

About 6-8 weeks on, I cut the link with the mother plant and kept the babies in a sheltered spot over winter.

Mid April, I then plated the babies into their desired positions.
