I put in some primo cabbage and Autumn broccoli plants (that i had grown from seed ) last Thursday, i mixed some gromore in with the soil and put some lime around them in a  box line and watered them in, looked OK yesterday but today the leaves are going a sort of pale colour. I planted both my sprouts&caulis the same way and had no problems, does anybody know what the problem is Please Help!!!! PS. could it be too much gromore?

Tee Gee

Were they hardened off before you planted them out?

Perhaps they are sulking a bit because they have been moved.

Give them a few days then report back

compo49

Hi TeeGee, looked at them today 9 out ten cabbages and 8 out of 10 broccoli still limp and pale/yellow patchy leaves, as said other brassicas OK planted like on your site IE box line of lime around and mixed growmore in with soil and watered in. is it possible i used too much growmore ? some one said it was the lime that's caused it /scorching the roots. If so why are other brassicas OK will they recover? or will i have to resow and is there  still time? awaite your reply Compo49

Quotebox line of lime around and mixed growmore in with soil and watered in. is it possible i used too much growmore

Let me clarify a few things first;

Box of lime around plants Do you mean how I do it in my slide show?

If so then it is not the lime

mixed growmore in with soil
Do you mean you top dressed the bed with growmore then raked it in or did you literally mix growmore and soil and fill the planting hole with it?

If it was the former method then it won't be the growmore.

If it was the latter then yes you might have too high a concentration of growmore against the young roots.

If you have done this I suggest you lift them out again shake the soil/growmore of the root ball and replant them in a hole a few inches away from the original. The plants will eventually benefit from the growmore you put in the former hole.

Does all that make sense?

Hi Tee Gee .yes to your slide show. and yes to latter re growmore mixed in planting hole prob too much! will do what you suggest and move them what Chance's they will survive and recover? thanks for replies await answer to last question Compo49

Tee Gee

Quotewhat Chance's they will survive and recover

Difficult to say not having seen them!

Dig your planting hole put the plant in it wash the soil backfill in with clean water ( no feeding) this will wash soil/silt into the disturbed root system giving minimum root damage.

Then it is just a case of  leaving them to their own resources.

You could sow a few more seed as back up in the event of a failure.

If not required as replacements, these can be grown on in pots or a nursery bed until such time as you have some space to plant them out.

Hi Tee Gee already done what you suggested in your second reply before i read the last one but watered them well so may have same effect  as in your last reply/wash away residue on roots will see how they go have also sown some more seed just in case. thanks Compo49
