I'm trying one called "Pruden's Purple" for the first time and wondering how it will be.
Another new one is "Polpost".
Also growing hybrid"Big Boy"plus a plum tomato grown from seeds taken out of a store bought tomato.

I've never tried a purple tomato but would love to see some pictures once they've grown and also what your verdict on the taste etc.

Good luck !

I've grown a number of purple and black tomatoes. In general I find them tastier than most reds.

I grew Black Russian a few years ago. It was a monster of a plant, but the tomatoes' flavour was better than average by quite a long way. Couldn't say the same of the black peppers that I grew in the same year, although they were very pretty.

:) thank you for your answers.  now I'm even more excited!
the plants are already huge- I should have listened to TeeGee and not planted so early. I knew better  ::) but just can't resist.

Black Russian is lovely you say Rosa_Mundi, thats great as I have 10 seedlings. Its the only type I'm doing.

Talking of purple, purple dragon carrots have a great taste, much more 'herby' than orange.

oh i do hope i get a puple or black one from the tomato seed swap, they sound awesome:)

If you don't, I could let you have some Black Seaman seed; they're big meaty toms with a good flavour, a bit slow for outdoors but they'd do well in a greenhouse.

If you PM me I'll mail you a few purple seed, Little LadyB. There are only a few left.
they're tiny little things as tomato seeds go so I guess  this means they'll be small tomatoes.

There were quite a few black toms in the tom swap,  I put some types in but you will have to be patient cos I didn't keep a list!! I do remember there was Black plum, Black cherry, Japanese Black trifele, Prudens Purple,Black pear,Nyagous and Black Russian, there might have been more   but this is just what I remember.

I do however have quite a lotblack toms, they are my personal favourites.

Forgot to say, Sawfish, I think that Black Russian do best under glass - my outdoor ones were quite slow to start fruiting. They are also very heavy toms and might needs some support for the fruits.
