Has anyone tried to grow Mango's from a Mango stone? ;D

I do know I wont get a Mango from it but wondered what they grew like,  It's a bit of a palaver but this is my second week of soaking the stone.  I did remove all the fruit and then sandpapered it down and made a hole in it.

Would be interested to hear if anyone has had any success with the stone :)

I have,it is iffy, but I have had several, sme grew some didn't, plant them fresh though don't let them dry out. They grow into a rather straggly plant, at least mine did but bear in mind I am a veggie grower!!

I seem to remember there is a whole website devoted to growing them with types etc.

I seem to remember planting them on their edge??

Thanks Jeannine.

I was hoping to get some lush exotic houseplant :)  Oh well, it will be interesting.

Although I have had an allotment for years after reading the threads on here I have taken to sowing seeds of every kind this year, as you know Jeannine, with my mad interest in tomato seeds to beat the blight ;D

I've played with them in the past and found the best method was to get a suitable knife and carefully split the stone down the joints. The inner seed can then be removed and planted in a pot.

It's one of those silly things I used to do quite often, grow something tender all summer then subject it to a hardiness test by leaving it ouside during the winter to see if it survives.

Paw paw makes a nice lush houseplant for a year maybe two. Pm me if anyone wants fresh seeds. Anyone except the ebay dork that is.

Thanks for that Eristic, I'll try that, have another mango to eat.

So did you have any success?  If so what did the plant look like?

Oh thank you,  by the way pomegranite seeds and fresh passion fruit grow easily as do dragon seeds.

Years agi I seemed to remember frowing the flowering bit of a pieapple by placing it in water with about 1/4 in fruit attached I haven't been able to do it for a long time so I think I might be doing something wrong. I cy=urrently have one sitting atop some water rather like a hyacinth bulb...any ideas anyone please.

Joh has got interested in growing pips and seeds which is remarkable for him as he has never grown anything on his own before.

From memory the mango leaves were 4-6" long plain green oval on a straight stem. Not the most exciting of plants and is probably why they got left outside.

Paw paws have large lobed leaves on long stalks and grow fast in warm conditions. Other fruit woth playing with are custard apples and tamarind.

I chuck mango stones out in the garden for the birds to pick off any leftover pulp most of the time I forget about them & end up with mango trees which usually get to about a foot or so tall before winter comes along & the frost kills them.
I don't think I would want one indoors though mango trees can get huge.

I find that pineapple grow best if you trim off the flesh, leaving just the central stem plus a tiny bit of flesh, and then plant in gritty compost. Now carrot tops grow fine in a saucer of water....

Jeannine

Oh thank you for that, I will transfer the last one to  gritty soil, I popped it  water onle a couple of days ago, bless you heart I am grateful for that Xx Jeannine
