I thought I had it all sussed but the more books I read the more confused I get. Do onions go in with roots or as some books suggest legumes.   I need to plant onions, shallots and garlic this weekend but cannot be sure where to plant them to practise crop rotation.
Any advice,  most appreciated. ???
Thanks, Nicola

I have planned for alliums (onions, garlic, leeks) to have a spot all of their own in my rotation plan.

It goes like this:

1. Potatoes
2. Legumes
3. Brassicas
4. Roots
5. Alliums
6. Green Manure

I have 12 beds ready, so will pair them up and have a 6 crop rotation.
Thats the plan anyway!

i tend to have alliums as a distinct group of their own  in my rotation like Jimmy James .  leeks would be part of it too. really the most important thing is not what group you plant them in or with but that you religiously rotate them each year so that you dont get white rot and other diseases of the alliums.  the tricky part (i find) is when you grow aliums overwinter so that the seasons overlap.

Things like this have been confusing me too, but it seems that it doesnt really matter what you put them in with, just to ensure they rotate the next year...

In her book, Jane Perone says she has a rotational system that seperates three areas - the first potatoes / tomatos etc, the second legumes and the third, onions, roots, beets, leaves ....

hi there
we have our onions, shallots, leeks, scallions and garlic in a set area of our plot and have done for 3 years now. at the mo we have japs in, next to leeks then a row of scallion. other half has dug over next part today ready for the shallots and onions we got last week. we rotate within the area and have had no problems so far. we use growmore and chicken pellets nothing else. hope this helps cheers teena
