broad beans

I started these off at home in root trainers and planted them out nice and deep around November/December
the fleece was to offer a little bit of shelter from the wind and any frost
they're the biggest beans on the whole site ;D (now I've said that they'll be wiped out by something nasty)

Mine were planted in October, and they're a fraction the size. I'm not complaining, but your method could be a way of spreading the season a little. This year I'm trying three varieties, and I'm hoping to save seed from all of them. That means it's critical to have them flowering at different times.

Aquadulce Claudia, Crimson-Flowered, and Grando Violetto. The latter is a new one on me, but I fancied the idea of purple BB's. Robinson's have it.

They look great. I did for a few winters sow aquadulce in Nov and onverwinter them - but used to get really bad chocolate spot. The advice was to try starting them off after Feb and I must admit it now avoids the worst of chocolate spot - but doesn't get rid of it completely. It also introduced another pest - the mice are very hungry in Feb!

Trying Grando Violetto for the first time this year too! Wish my beans looked as healthy as yours. I have a very big case of bean envy! ;D

I think I might be dashing to the plot tonight armed with blankets ::)

to be fair, all the people who planted their beans direct aren't that far behind me... most are a good couple of inches high. we do have nice light soil so it doesn't get waterlogged, although the downside is that in summer it turns to dust. but for a first attempt I'm quite pleased with them, and thanks for your encouraging comments :)
