I suppose it's a case of picking it out all in one go, or being constantly worried about cutting yourself on any bits that are left.

Hi

I have massses of glass on my plot, paticularly at one end where there apparently used to be a greenhouse. I am covering what I can with a shed the rest I am filling an old dustbin with and will take to the local tip. The remainder of the plot has small pieces everywhere which I pick up put in old coffee jars and then put in the bottle bank.

I have a theory that glass is a variety of weed and if you leave even the smallest piece in the soil it reproduces a hundred-fold. In the garden I've been picking bits up for the last forty years. (and I've never used glass in any shape or form in my vegetable area!) As for the allotment........

I keep a waste sack handy and pop in any rubbish I find, then take it to the dump.

You do not have to pick it up!   but from a safety point of view, particularly if you weed by hand, it is best picked up to prevent you inadvertently lacerating yourself with a buried shard of glass.

The choice is yours.

And only recently-broken glass is the sharpest - when it's been in the soil for years, and been dug around, knocked against stones, rained on etc the sharp edges eventually become blunt. Then it's a bit safer to pick up.  Eventually you'll be glass-free.

It's a supercooled liquid, and you get enough flow to blunt the edges a little with time. It's not nice to find though.

i hate the stuff and i suppose i will be picking it up till I'm old and gray why do people use allotments as dumps don't they realise that some day somebody will be using it to grow veg in it shouldn't be allowed but that's an other story :'( :'(

I am forever digging up bits of glass in my plot too.

I never leave any incase I grab a handful of the stuff when Im harvesting.

I have a builders bucket and when its full I stop off at the rubbish tip on the way home and get rid of it.

My greenhouse was recently vandalised so I have plenty to go at the moment....13 smashed panes to be precise!
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

Yep, along with bits of blue & white china and clay pipe stems. As for the glass, I remove every piece I find as a matter of routine. Consider how often you are alone on the plot and how quickly help would arrive if you had a really nasty cut.
