Pea Question

Can anyone help?
Am I too late to sow peas to overwinter? And if not can anyone recommend a good variety to sow now. I am in Leicestershire.

Can't say I have known anybody to sow peas over winter. Usually I get 5-6 succession sowings throughout the summer from early and late varieties.

Not too late, the time is about right but it is always a gamble. Mine were pot-sown at home on 24th Oct, germinated 29th Oct and planted last sunday 4th Nov.

I sow in pots to avoid the mice and cover with netting to avoid the pigeons. Many people will tell you its not worth the trouble of growing over the winter months as they only mature 3-4 weeks ahead of spring-sown ones. They obviously don't like peas. I expect my spring sown peas will just about be ready when the winter sown ones are finishing.

The variety I grow is Pilot but any hardy variety should do. If you like peas, have the seeds and the space available, and are willing to take a chance against a severe winter, give it a go.

 Hi all,
          I have sown sugar snap in grow tubes & will over winter them in a cold frame, then plant them out  at the end of March. This works well with sweet peas & understand it will work with sugar snaps too ;D

I`ll go with Feltham First and/or Meteor/Douce Provence(a cross between Meteor &Kelvedon Wonder).

Round seeded varieties might not have the flavour of wrinkle seeds but they are pretty hardy and crop early.
