I need to clear the last bit of my allotment which has been left to grow weeds and grass for the last year.  It is about 30 feet by 30.  The grass is about 2 foot high.  I plan to use a weedkiller and then rake up the dead stuff and put on the compost heap. Is this O.K?  I would like advice on which weedkiller to use and when is it safe to plant.   Please can anyone help.

I think it is a bit late to be using weedkillers they work best when the plant that you want killing is in full flow.

I would suggest a flame gun to burn it off, then when the young weeds start to grow next spring blast it with a glyphosate based weed killer.

You can plant out straight after the weeds have died back.

Why not just cover it with newspapers and/or cardboard, add as much horse manure as possible, slap over a few pieces of carpet or plastic, weigh down and leave until Spring?

Various birds are killed with a couple of stones - you shut out light(which knackers/kills the grass) - you feed the ground with the manure and the cardboard/newspaper - and you don't have to use weedkillers.

Wormies help a lot as well, pulling whatever they can grab down into the earth.
What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?
