I eat and enjoy these passion fruits grown at home all the time, when the seeds inside are red, they are very sweet. I love them and make them into jam too XX Jeannine

Thanks Mr Dad,i only hope it will ripen before the first frost. But will give it go Jeannine if it does, there will be no jam as it's only got the one fruit.
Are there any other variety's apart from this(don't know the name) one that will grow out doors

You've got a Passiflora Caerulea there. The reason for the rumour about the fruits being inedible is that generally - in this country at least - even when they ripen the flavour is... well, tasteless really. The seeds are nice and crunchy though.

There are several Passiflora you can try outdoors, depending on where you are in the UK: I'm growing Edulis (the Purple Granadilla that you see in the shops), though it's still very young so no flowers or fruit yet, Mollisima (the banana passionfruit) which is flowering, fruiting and generally taking over the entire garden, and Alate -  though I don't think I'll live long enough to see one of its fruits as they're reputed to be around 6" by 4"! I dunno though, maybe with a vat of comfrey tea...    ;D

I tried making jam from these, but agree with Amazin - there ain't much flavour! Perhaps you had a different variety Jeannine?

I remember buying passion-flower fruits in a wholesale market in York circa 1985.

It was a very hot day and I also bought some stilton cheese with walnuts.

I sampled them both on the way home in my boyfriend's car and promptly projectile vomited over the dashboard. It was a Ford Fiesta.

I've never EVER since bought any food product that has 'tropical fruit' on the label.

I still like walnuts and Stilton cheese, but never the twain shall meet.

I also veto Ford Fiestas. But that's not difficult.
