A 'deep scented, dark red rose' I have is called Josephine Bruce.  In a good year it is absolutely beautiful, and it has a wonderful scent.

In a year like this they do not do so well.  The flowers form, and start to open, then they get rained on, the petals get stuck together, and form a rotten brown ball..

Another problem with the 'old' roses is that they had a flush of flowers and then nothing.

You need to look at the modern rose growers like David Austin, and (I think) Peter Beales.

They have produced wonderful, old English cabbage type roses.  They have a very good range of colours, wonderful scents, but are known as 'remontants' (I think that's the word).  What it means is that they flower continuously throughout  the summer.

Rather than go for the old HT varieties, if I was going to buy any roses nowadays I would go for the new DA/PB varieties

yes you can still get ena harkness and there must be so many to match your request of a deep scented dark rose but I would suggest the william shakespeare rose to check out - should fit your mum's needs  :)
