can anybody tell me whats hapened to my normally reliable rasp canes. They were new about 6 years ago and the first 2/3 years not bad but the last couple they have been absolutly brilliant. I noticed earlier in the year I hadn't much growth though I am sure I will have cut the old cane last year but it looks like old canes to look at now. One plot holder recons possibility of a root disease but how will I know for next year?

It is worth digging a cane up and looking at the roots.

When this happened to mine I found that the roots had been eaten away by weevil grubs.

The probable culprit is the Raspberry weevil or the Vine weevil whose larvae fed on the roots.

Try Vine Weevil killer if you are not bothered about organic gardening.

The above picture is a Vine Weevil on a raspberry.

The site is not for the faint hearted as it lists 40 chemicals for use before and after planting raspberries to ensure that they arrive on your table in perfect condition!

Which is part of the reason I grow my own!
