Hi and welcome,

I think its still 50 birds before you get into goverment paperwork.
If you say which breeds here someone may know of a breeder for you.

Or try these sites,

Oh how exciting which breeds are you looking for?
Do plan to grow rhubarb along side the runs as the leaves are a natural wormer for the hens and they help themselves when they need it. The do leave the stalks which helps if you like crumbles and pies.

northener

I thought more than 8 and you have to notify Defra, maybe wrong.

teresa

This was copied from the Defra site.

To ensure information can be communicated effectively if there is an outbreak of bird flu, or any other infectious disease, Defra has created the Great Britain Poultry Register. You must register if you have commercial premises with more than 50 birds.

hope this helps

its definitely 50 birds - so you will have to be careful if you breed chicks!

lyndon.nelson

thanx for your advice but if and when they do hatch any i will make sure its within the fifty mark

well it sounds exciting... i always wanted different old types... started with hybrids and now just keep inheriting all sorts from friends and family.  so i have a mix of purebreeds and hybrids and bitzers.

This link may be of interest to you.

http://www.defra.gov.uk/farm/livestock/poultry/index.htm

You can register over the phone, it seems to be a list of breeders just incase bird flu comes again they will contact you then.  Have a read see what you think save the link just in case you over produce ha ha. I know you havent got any yet.
Oh the rhubarb is a old remedy found it on a US  poultry site. My girls got to ours and I started looking into poisoned hens and what to do but my girls were fine.
Apple cider vinigar the cloudy one, is good for cleansing/toinic  them etc given in water for  3 days each month.
My friend chops a onion up for her girls says it like a antibiotic? crushed garlic in their water ment to do the same thing.
Your breeds sound lovely I reconise some will look for pics of others.

Some good breeders on there some not so good but worth a look see if any are local to you.
OO Cream legbar crested after 2 years of trying to get pullets ( hatching) and only gettings co*ks. A few weeks ago got 6 eggs all fertile 5 hatched and 3 pullets. Yes treating them like gold dust.
My other success was 12 gold silkie eggs MM all fertile and 9 hatched.
Now fan in machine has broken OH very happy but I have my babies.
