Grape?

We were given a grape cutting last year which did quite well but I thought died over winter.  It hadn't and this year it's gone nuts and is staging a takeover of the greenhouse!  :o ;D

However, I can't see any signs of fruit on it and wondered if it would actually fruit this year or if perhaps it takes a few years?

I'll be honest and say I haven't got a clue about grapes, I just planted it, watered it and try and keep control of where it is growing!

Is there anything I need to be doing to it?

Thanks

My grape vine grows along 40foot of fencing and then into my neighbours garden, its a good jod they like little grapes.

No need to worry-they take a couple of years or so to get mature enough to bear fruit. If it`s in a greenhouse, like mine, you will have to be quite ruthless in your pruning regime.

Ideally(don`t look at mine) you want to have it trained from the back of the house and then up and along the eave, cutting back the side spurs to fit the availabe space. Easy to say but if you leave it for any length of time it takes over-I know :-[

Could grapes be grown from seed?  I don't mean seeds in the sort you get at Tesco's - maybe if there were any seed producers that had a variety.

hmmm.  new project: go look for grape seeds!

If I ever get grapes, would you like me to send the seeds to you?

Yeah!  Thanks Si, Now that would be a challenge to get a vine from seed!

I thought I had found a wild growing vine in the new lottie next to my original one - the new one is covered in 3' tall weeds as the last guy didn't work on it so we kicked him off and I was next on the list so I got it!

Anyhooo,  I was trudging through it to check out the fence at the back as I'm going to keep chooks in this one and needed to check things out and there, in amongst the weeds, was a vine with a bunch of immature grapes on them!!  I was amazed!  I thought I'd struck gold!

Turned out the gardener that my new plot backs onto was doing a bit of tidying in his own lottie and had chucked his prunings over the fence!  >:(  ::)

You can't be sure what you will get if you grow it from seed Suzi and if it is on it's own roots it won't be phylloxera(?) resistant... all modern grapes are grafted onto a related species from USA..

I thought that phylloxera hadn't reached the UK yet?
