Hi all,

I bought these at a farmers market last weekend in Boyle Co. Roscommon (Irish Interest.....may be that the person I bought it from is on this board)

I cant remember what it is, but he said that it was Kole-something. Definatly a german sounding name.

We steamed the leaves first and the y were lovely. If it aids in identification, they were large and Oval in shape.

Id appreciate the help, as I would love to get them again/even grow them.

Kohl Rabi... Austrian actually ... growing some myself fior the first time in years Likes it Damp so should be oK

it's kohlrabi - looks like a turnip, tastes like a cabbage ( a bit). Grow as a brassica (with all the same pests etc)

That's Kohl Rabi. Green or red. Scrummy. Eat raw or cooked/boiled.

I like to peel and eat like an apple. Cut into slices in a bowl of ice water make a great refreshing nibble on a hot day. Taste like a cross between a turnip and a cabbage.

Ver easy to grow. Sow seed direct or bring them on fast and early under cover. Try sowing some now...not too late.

Oh damp will not be a problem  :P

As I type, the weather here in Galway is woeful. Lashing rain and looks as though it aint going to stop.

I only have a small balcony but I reckon I will try and source some seeds now and plant them asap in a container.

Seems it harvests into mid winter. Not bad.

Very easy to grow. Pull them at just over galf ball size. At tennis ball size they start to go woody.
Not sure about 'damp' saddad, I'v always treated them the same as cabbage with regard to watering.

Much under-rated veg and can be pricy in the shops 'cos there's not many commercial growers.

This is probably one for the Swap shop forum but does anyone have any (preferably Organic) Kohl Rabi seeds they are willing to swap for a few CDC feathers for fly tying!!??

You lucky people. This is my favourite veg for eating raw and, although it seems to grow for me, the bulbous bit that you eat, is largely absent, appearing as a very slight swelling of the stem. Ah well, keep batting away. One day perhaps…

No panic euro'....that happens sometimes. Pull out weedy ones to leave 4-6" between plants and one day you'll look and see the fruit has galloped along.
