Side shoots on Sweetcorn

A lot of my Sweetcorn are growing one or two side shoots from the bottom of the stem, :(  should I remove them or will the bear a cob if left  :)

Yep, leave them--free xtra cobs.

Alan they are called tillers, leave them on,they usually indicate good growing conditions, and the plant is getting good nourishment, some varieties are more likely to get them than others. They will not take nourishment from the plant.

They are usually behind the mainstem for maturity and when the plant tassles (male at top starts to do his thing)usually the tillers are not mature enough for pollination, so don't rely on getting extras.

2 cobs per plant I find is the best.

However,tillers can also indicate that the plants are spaced too far apart.

is it usual to have more than 2 tillers?

i have one plant that looks like its sending 4 "tillers" from its base :o

the variety is "F1 incredible" and are being grown in a pot with 4 more plants, so not too far spaced i think

I am frankly not sure about the pot, I  think would leave them alone,they may not have so much room, but honestly I can't advise you as they are in pots,have agoogle, ...tillers on corn...see what you can find XX Jeannine
