Soapy water does work for aphids, I used it on a plum tree that was covered with them on the underside of the leaves.  Not sure about black fly though, I'm sure a couple of others will be along soon with their methods.

If the infestation is on the growing tip remove the tip down to the lowest point to where you can see blackfly and remove from the site.

Otherwise a blackfly spray will be required

ok thanks will hit the nursery/garden centre this weekend

Baaaaaaaa

Soapy water worked well on my beans.

You have to get the soap in their eyes.
That way they have to rub their eyes to get the soap out, but to do that they have to let go of the plant, and hence fall to the ground  ;)

hi  :)
we are going to try rhubarb water on our plot.
it is suppose to be a good spray for aphids and other pests.

My spring planted beans are smothered in blackfly but are also accompanied by loads of ladybirds so I'm gonna let them fight it out between themselves. I'm only gonna grow aquadulce in future. Trouble free and the blackfly dont get ahold on then before ya can pick yer beans. Just wish I had planted more last October cos mine are all gone now.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

You don't need anything as powerful as rhubarb, which will kill a lot of insects you want to keep. Just use soapy water.

Summer savory is always recommended to grow as a companion to broad beans, it's supposed to deter the black fly.  Has anyone succeeded in growing the stuff?  It won't grow for me at all  :(
