I acquired a portable greenhouse (6 x 4, like a frame tent with heavy polythene covering) over the weekend, and I wondered if anyone has any hints or tips on what these are best used for, how long they last etc. At the moment, I'm planning to put some of my "overflow" of tomato plants in it (dug into the soil rather than pots or growbags - I can't get to it absoluteley every day).

Anything that goes in a 'standard' greenhouse should do OK in there. I made one on my plot and the only problem is watering. I've managed to rig up a temp drip feed but like you, I only get there occasionally so need to have a serious think about a better system.

How about trays and a capilliary mat with plastic tube feeding into some kind of water reservoir, watering can or whatever.  6x4 should last a while if you make sure is anchored well.  Sorry, I know how it works but I know I don't explain it very well!

How is it for ventilation?

I have a mini plastic greenhouse and have to open it during the day when it's warm, shut it overnight. If I'm ever late up, even by 10am on a day like this it's like a sauna in there.

There's no door on mine!...and I've left a gap at the top at the other end. It's sweltering in there, much hotter than my glass affair. I've got just one Cape goosberry in there at the mo, and planning peppers and possibly melons too so capillary matting wouldn't do. A pipe from my water but going round the large pots with a small hole drilled in at each station might be the best idea. That's what I've done so far, and I'll check the result at the week-end.
