Bleach wash: I use 2 tablepoons (30 ml) to a gallon of water.Oh and don't take of the handle, they keep much longer with it on. XX Jeannine

thanks Jeannine. Made the mistake last year of storing them near the apples in the garage. One bad apple eh? This year, God willing on the crop, we'll store them in the vestibule, and have them as a conversation piece

Some where I have an article in a book which gives the average storage dates for most squash, it is useful as some start to go much faster than others and you can use them first. I find the Spaghetti family are the first to go. I will try to find it, but I haven't looked at it for years so be patientXX Jeannine

I suppose a simple guide to storage is how hard they are to cut cut open. You're right about the spag squash going first. They did. Delicious the lot of them

Which type of bleach do you use, peroxide or hypochlorite?

One of the peroxide bleaches would be better for the environment; Domestos is hypochlorite, which releases chlorine. Hypochlorite releases oxygen, and breaks down to nothing more than oxygen and water.

I was thinking of using sterliizer for wine equipment - sodium metabisulphite

Jeannine

You are probably right, but I use so little of this type of thing I have not bothered too much. I mix it, wipe the squash down and chuck the rest down the drain, then I do it a second time. I think the bottle of Domestos I have is 3 years old and was the smallest one I could find. XX Jeannine

Last one used in a curry last week, thought they had all gone but one had been hiding!

I too am trying to eat up all the soft fruit left in the freezer before this year's comes in.
