Hi  :)  I'm new to this forum and my husband and I are enthusiastic but very new allotment holders.  We only started three weeks ago and we're totally exhausted after spending every free moment trying to get what was basically a dumping ground in to some kind of order for planting and sewing.

We are slowly making progress but every time we plant or sew anything we can then get in our car and watch the local bird population flock down to dig up what we've just put in or munching our cauliflower and sprout seedlings to bare stalks.  We've now tried:  plastic carrier bags tied to sticks, CDs strung over the beds, a scarecrow.  The most successful was netting but somehow they've figured out how to get underneath it then gotten stuck.  Our local garden centre can only suggest a spray which repells all animals but its really only designed for small borders and will cost us a fortune to do the whole allotment.

All advice will be very gratefully received.

Apart from running round in circles flapping my arms, can any one suggest anything???

Use fleece to cover seeds or seedlings, and netting for vulnerable larger crops. Don't bother with smells; a lot of birds have bery little sense of smell anyway. See what other gardeners in the area do.
