March 1945. I guess I'm a youngster compared to some here but having planted five rows of potatoes this morning my back feels about 90 :D

QUOTE FROM TIN SHED: "Our allotment community is the same. The other day the age range was from 90 to 2yrs[ well little Joe does sort of help his mum and chats away to us all at tea break!] It does'nt seem to matter who oyu are, how old you are, where you come from or whether you are a newbie or an oldie - we all seem to get on"

Ours is pretty much like this, but you have to 'earn your stripes' with some of the older guys, especially if you're a younger woman (Ooooohhh ... I've just referred to myself as a 'younger woman' :D )

Born 1965 though ... I suppose that makes me middle-aged 8) PAH  >:(

AN EXAMPLE OF 'EARNING STRIPES' ..

Today, Ahmed spied my parsnip seedlings in toilet roll tubes ready for planting out.

AHMED: "NO, NO, NO, NO, NOOOOOOO! What the HELL are you doing planting coriander in individual pots? I told you how to plant it last year." (He was quite cross about it too!)

TRIXIE: "They're parsnips Ahmed."

AHMED: "What's a parsnip?" (He genuinely didn't know)

TRIXIE: "I will be running classes about exotic vegetables such as these every Sunday morning @ 9am sharp. All welcome. £1 fee"

We like to play a couple of rounds of 'Horticultural, Cross-Cultural Ping Pong' every day. It keeps us both on our toes  ;D But we also have a lot of respect for each other despite the difference in age and trouser content!

Another good thread, Jeannine.  Me - 1940, Mr W 1937 - and both keener than ever on our lottie.  Interesting fact tho is that the couple on our site that I have  learnt most from are in their 20s/30s   (You know what they say "Never too old to learn" ;))

Trixie  ;D ;D
Equality isn't everyone being the same, equality is recognising that being different is normal.

Well I am referred to as "that young girl from plot 2" ....that works for me!!!!!!!!

I have had some lovely experiences down the lotties, one chap is really freiendly - not judgemental at all, just helpful - even makes me tea!  One bloke mended my shed door without even being asked as he saw it needed it (council shed).

SOme other I feel are "watching me" - because their way is the right way after all isn't it?

BUt then I get feedback via the site manager (who got me my plot) - and he says that everyone is amazed at how well I am doing - without adding "for a woman" on the end - bless him - he is genuine in his support and commented the other day that all his new lease-holders are women!

I love it!

If they add 'for a woman' i hope you will donk them over the head with your fork!

Make the most of today, because you'll never have it back again.

Grandma

1943. Bent and b*ggered. 4'-10" and shrinking fast! Will never have the smallholding in deepest, darkest Wales that we so nearly got in the 70s - when land was SO cheap!  :'( Or a lottie  :'(. But still love stumbling around my garden  :) :) :)

At 92½ my Dad's still managing to keep up a garden twice the size of mine  - (he could moan for England, tho! ;D ;D ;D) Can I enter him as 1914 if I take some piccies as proof? ;)

Both sprogs into growing stuff and grandsons into eating it - so I've passed on the good genes!  ;D xxx
