hi there. how easy or hard is it to grow asparagus?
I fancy having a try and have read a few sites on how to grow but don't really understand in the way they describe. Do you think a beginner could do it?

Yes, certainly a beginner can do it.It is not difficult to grow asparagus but you need to prepare your ground well then be patient.

You can grow from seed but you will save a year by buying roots.

This is the way I do it, I am sure there is more way than 1.

We made a long raised bed as we wanted a big amount, my bed is 4 feet x20 feet.

We used 12 inch wood and made a frame, then filled it with a blend on mature manure, potting soil and sand. We got the bed ready in autumn.

We bought 20 Cito asparagus plants , and when they were delivered we planted them according to the instructions as soon as they arrived.

It was very easy once the bed was built and filled.

The first year you cannot pick any as the roots absorb the goodness from the foliage that is grown the fist year.

The second year you can cut very lightly, some say noy at all.

The third year your bed should be well established and you will bo OK, .you will get shoots for approx 6 weeks.

My bed is 5 years ols and my crop is excellent.I have never regretted doing it.

You can grow from seed, I recently grew some seeds from my own bed, they germinated quickly and grew into nice little plants but I then gave them away.

If you grow from seed you will need to add another year to the above.

There is bound to be someone who can tell you about growing from seed.

Maintenance is easy, keep the bed weed free, never tale all the spears from one plant as they need to grow some ferns.let the ferns grow and die off naturally.

Good Luck XX Jeannine
When God blesses you with a multitude of seeds double  the blessing by sharing your  seeds with other folks.
