MIne will go in this coming week as the children are off school - so me and the littlist one will be doing lots of digging.......him great big holes and me putting in my spuds!

One question??  whats the difference between earlies, lates or whatever.....is it just the time that they take to grow?.....and how do you tell?

Hi Louise,
You are probably blessed where you are.
Wouldn't worry too much about 1st/2nd earlies etc.
Plant an early now for flavour (recommend 'Arran Pilot'), should be pickable late June.
Also plant now a maincrop, a good allrounder is 'Desiree' for roasting/mash etc.. Lift any time after the tops start to dry off - Late Sept?
Kent may have particular varieties suited to your part of the world. I'm sure the advice will be forthcoming!

Hi, Louise, We planted just one row of Rocket a month ago but covered them in fleece. The rest went in on Saturday.  My O/H insists on the one row really early and covering with fleece, quite honestly it makes about 3weeks difference but he has to be one of the first to dig new potatoes. I let him carry on if thats all it takes to keep him happy.

All my spuds are now in the ground, thanks for your input.
