Anybody made stout

Has anybody made stout in kit form or from scratch, i've seen a few kits and they look good.

I've tried before with buckets full of wild hops and a 50:50 mix of crystal and chocolate malt... Unsurprisingly it didn't ferment at all, so I added sugar. It ended up tasting like engine oil  :o

I made a batch years ago from a quality kit (very important).
It was superb! much better than the lager and bitter kits which always disappoint me no matter how careful I am to use the best ingredients, water etc.
Have a go, you will not be disappointed.
I used a pressure barrel instead of bottles, imho well worth the expense.

my fave stout recipe in kit form consists of a good quality can of malt 40 pints  and make up into just three gallons oh yes thats wicked and a real tasty full flavoured drink and if you want to make it a little bit special then add to the three gallons before bottling one of the flavouring that is used for sprit manufacture i like to use the swiss almond chocolate ( it tastes like toblerone ) very rich and sophisticated something like the cherry brandy flavour would work out really good also
may i also comment on the suggestion that you use a pressure vessel i have had little joy in trying to maintain pressure in my three ( by the way they are for sale lets say a tenner for all three ) the bestest way i had found so far is to use pint bottles like magners using proper crown corks its worth it and it looks the part

I agree about the pressure issue but if you use the big cylinders rather than the sparklets jobbies you can just give it a zuzz when you want to draw some off.
I personally do not want to be washing and cleaning labels off bottles of Magners that have cost a fortune in the first place.

Anyone recommend a supplier of pressure barrels that actually work.
