Never been inside, but it's in a beautiful setting by the water meadows and the river, lots of medieval buildings around the old bridge. Might be close enough to the M11 to get a bit of road noise, though.

Yep - OH works in RAF Wyton, just up the road, St. Ives is a nice area, very picturesque. A beautiful river running through the centre of the town (take a loaf for feeding the numerous ducks and swans).
OH has been in the Dolphin, says it's nice - but that was as enthusiastic as he got!

Enjoy it anyway
Kathi :-)

Have  a look on the Trip Advisor website http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/  and look up user reviews

Just remember to filter out American expectations.
is it in the sale?

...just called him and he says its wonderful and the food ( esp the carvary ) is great

It's not near the M11 at all. The only road noise is just the usual town noise and it's right on the banks of the Great Ouse.....when it floods it's in it!

It's annoying I can't find a view of the Dolphin Hotel from the river which is it's best side. It doesn't flood that much and it's only been the carpark as it's in the water meadow.
I've never been in though as there are so many other places to eat.

Have a nice time, it's supposed to be a bit warmer tomorrow.

cornykev

Kea you will never make a weatherperson, ;D arrived midday it was bloody freezing, even the ducks had earmuffs  ;D, hotel was very nice and thats where I stayed in the warm, they was going to do some photos out side but decided against it. You know its cold outside when the swans have bodwarmers on.  ;D A friend I used to work with met up for a chin wag, then we had a wander around the town, the sun was out but was cold in the shade, lovely place but it was nice to get back home to the warmth.   ;D ;D ;D

Kea, you're right, it's about 12 miles to the M11 and about 2 miles to the dreaded A14. It used to have a very good market but that's gone downhill lately, instead of being a general market it has degenerated into a clothing, plant and bric-a-brack market. I don't bother with it now.

Not sure why I said M11 - I meant the horrible A14; sounds like the noise isn't as much of a blight on St.Ives as it is in Huntingdon.

Sad to hear about the decline of the market - especially when you think it was one of the most important in medieval England. I've only been on a bank holiday and there seemed to be tens of thousands of people there.

Any of you locals know why the town is called after someone from Iran?

Kea

Sorry about the weather :-[
I got my weather forecast off the BBC site but they changed it when they saw it wasn't going their way!
We had an exceptionally nice day today ;D
It was called 'Slepe' until the Abbot of Ramsey changed it's name after a peasant dug up a stone coffin and someone had a dream about St Ivo who had supposedly visited in the 6th century. The Abbot decided the bones must be St Ivo's. Slepe means muddy possibly referring to the river crossing so St Ives is probably a nicer name even if the reason for it is a bit dubious. Though Slepe is easier to type!
Apparently we are getting a Sunday market for arts and crafts, the other weekly market is really good for plants. If you need a hairdresser St Ives is the place.....we must have more than any other town of the same size but you still can't get an appointment.
We also have a lot of pubs.
