I would love a box hedge around my front garden but its so expensive, how easy is it to take cuttings? and how long do they take?

It's not difficult, but  S-L-O-W. Box are slow to root and slow to grow. That's why they're so expensive to buy.

August/September is the time to do it.

I took about 50 cuttings a couple of years ago. Now thinking I should've done a few hundred  ::)

ACE - did you ask your client if she had any old paintings, jewellery etc that she didn't like either?

cambourne7

how long are the cuttings and do you need to use rooting powder.

I did a load of Buxus microphylla aurea in Sept. They were about 4 inches long 'cos it is a dwarf plant anyway, no rooting hormone, and done in my usual pure sand bed propagator, no heat. They are ready for potting up now.

If you buy Box from a place near us, what you get is 10 rooted cuttings in  standard compost, in the pot in which they were inserted as cuttings. I can see no need for  fancy equipment.

great i think i might pop down to garden centre and pick up some plants and have a got at taking some cuttings :-)

Want to alternate box, lavander and rosemary.

I need to measure how long the row is as well

Lidls did have them for £3.99 for 6.  Ours have sold out now - I bought one pack - they seem good plants.
