I have moved to a new allotment and need to put paths in. What are people's recommendations for cheap, tidy paths?

i used my old gareage if you phone a shop who sell gareages they might give you an old one as they have to pay to get rid of them a frend of mine did it after he saw my path very easy to lay as well

Hi and welcome I have put paths in using aol pallets and other free wood I made them wide enough to kneel down in and then put down weed suppressant from pund land and then have topped with straw that came from the local stables

Some Councils are happy to give away wood chippings - on a user collects basis

We have weed suppressing stuff with bark chippings on top, which we just top up when necessary. busy_lizzie

Another vote for weed supressant layer and wood chips, with some pallet wood edging maybe.

Get Wood chips from a local place like.... aspentreecare.net

Thats where I get mine in Glasgow as much as I want for free. Then just get some webbing from instore or somewher similar, at the moment its £2.99 for 1.5 metres by 10 metres.

Thick newspaper (free weed suppressant) covered with rather coarse but free woodchips from local factory. Willow.

Wood chips are better than planks. Slugs love planks! Slugs also like to lay eggs between wood borders and soil so keep soil away from the wood.

Interesting about newspaper as free weed suppressant, I might just do that next time.

One advantage of having planks beside beds is that when you get to your plot you know where the slugs live. I just lift my planks and 'relocate' the slugs I find.

I think he means garage  :) Perhaps it's an old concrete one ?

Why buy membrane when you can use compost bags.

One bag cut down either side gives about 5-6ft of mebrane then cover with wood chippings.

Problem I've found with compost bags is that they dont let water through so the woodchips just rot.

look at this on our plot first piccy http://lottieblogs.co.uk/febweek3.aspx we put wooden planks down to make the paths, still quite cheap under £10 for the lot and will last and looks cool.

I've also gone down the membrane & wood chips path  :), but beware of the Poundland membrane, we put it down two weeks ago & the b*****d ground elder is already growing up through it - it really is a complete waste of time as we shall have to take it all up & put better quality stuff down.
