Finding apple rootstocks

Hi

I fancied having a go at grafting an apple tree. I'm about to prune my tree, so I guess now is the time to get hold of some rootstocks.

I have phoned various garden centres, but with no luck.

I have found a couple of websites that sell them, but of course I would have to pay for postage. They also didn't appear to sell grafting wax.

I have thought about growing my own rootstocks from seeds I saved from last autumn, however I guess it will be a couple of years before any resulting tree could be used as a rootstock.

Any ideas or experiences would be much appreciated.

I live in Wiltshire, near Bath in case anyone knows somewhere.

Thanks

ACE

They are not the type of things you will get in a garden centre. I would look up and see if there are any fruit specialists in your area and beg  them to sell you some.

Try your local horticulture college they normally stock them for students to practice on. At my local college in Cheshire they cost £2.

Thanks for this.

There is an agricultural college nearby, so I will contact them.

Hi Greatpalm
Regarding rootstocks I have just ordered some M9 & M27 from Keepers Nursery (www.fruittree.co.uk   01622 726465) @ £1 each plus £5 delivery, they only do small quantities & recommended Frank P Mathews 01584 810214 for larger quantities

This is really interesting.

Can anyone tell me how to go about it, or perhaps give a link to a site that goes through it simply for a complete novice?
