I have a hydrangea that currently lives in a very large pot so it could move house with me earlier this year.

I'm now (fairly) settled in the new house and want to get hydrangea out of the pot and into the ground.

Am I better doing it now before winter or leaving it in situ until spring and replanting it then?

If its outside and in the pot you should be able to plant it without any trouble. I took cuttings 2 years ago and they are still in 8 in pots and have wintered out. I just haven't got around to planting them, They have survived ok
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Depends on where you have moved to and how cold the soil is. If you are in a ild district then you could plant now and no bother. If you live somewhere like us, then the plant would be best left in the pot until spring. And if you get the same weather as we have had over the last 12 years no matter when you plant it, it will never flower 'cos the buds are burnt off by the cold every year.
Gardening is the great leveller.

CC, I've been moving a couple of hydrangeas just now, so my thinking would be I'd go for it if I were you, depending on where you live?... the soil's still warm enough for their roots to get bedded and also  the garden soil's going to stay warmer longer than the soil surounding the plant you have it a pot?

I have just planted 50 or 60 oak leafed hydrangeas last week, mulch it well.
