I have been offered an allotment, just a few more weeks until it is vacated properly. Most of it is covered with black bags so will be able to get planting soon, I hope. I have heard that Potatoes would be the best thing to plant first, something to do with improving the soil. Would anyone give their view please?

If you have bare soil to start with you are doing really well, get a green manure like vetch/tares in asap and leave it to rot down over winter. Dig in any remains in spring and follow up with spuds... don't use rye grass as a first crop as you may have some couch come through and they are difficult to tell apart. You could use Phacalia or Poached egg plant and the bees will love you when they flower... the PEgg will def. over winter the phacalia only if it stays mild...

And a big congratualtions on getting a plot...
