Veg for Winter

I am thinking of 'doing' some veg over winter. I would like to  do them in tubs about 14" across and a foot deep. What would you recommend. It would be nice if they were things that I could use during the winter or early spring. I also need to know what sort of compost to use. I was also thinking of lining the pots with bubble wrap. Am I daydreaming or is it possible. I also have a light but not bright cellar I could put the pots in or a tiny plastic unheated greenhouse thingy. Any info will be gratefully received.

I would opt for quick turn around oriental salads such as mizuna, mibuna, mustards etc, + spinach, endive, and you might be in time for some of the radishes and chicories

Sounds good to me... and try some overwinter onion sets if you can leave them in until June.

Spring greens & Rocket.

Spring greens, yes, love 'em, why didn't I think of that. Will they be ok outside or can I do them in the cellar???

I have plug plants which I have potted on individually to get a good root system on them.  I will plant them out before the frosts and they will be ok outside all winter.

My spring cabbages are all in, hope slugs don't eat too many. Spinach coming through now too as I sowed direct.

When can I plant the cabage for "spring greens"? Is it now?

If you put them in now, watch out for the slugs & snails and the pigeons.

Thanks Grant - Will start them in pots I think as the ground isn't quite cleared yet.
