Dug up half row of Desiree yesteday (tops had given up the ghost, probably due to the dry whether) - not impressed with the yield, lots of spuds but not very big at all  >:( , mostly hens egg size spuds. Hopefully the remaining plants, which still have live tops, will be better.

Hows everyone else's?

calendula

haven't started mine yet as still on the second earlies - all great so far and I watered copiously the early main crop (arran victory) and main crop (pentland crown) but as the haulms are now beginning to die down I will be harvesting within the next 4 weeks and will let you know

we dug up one of ours - think they are desiree too - cannot remember now! and we were the same. But - we did not water them, so not sure what we expected really!

One row is still looking a bit green, so hoping they will be better.

on this subject actually - will the ones where the tops have died down be OK in the ground while we go on our holidays? wonm't be able to get them up till 16th september? or shall we lift them before we go?

The tops of my desiree have also died down, although the Cara are still standing tall. Lifted one root of each to check, and yes, they are not massive ... The desiree will be harvested next week, not sure on the Cara yet.
The impossible is just a journey away ...

They will be OK, desiree are one of the better ones for leaving in the soil as the slugs rarely touch them. Make sure you cut the dead or almost dead tops off though, leave a little bit of stalk poking up so you can still find them.

The only reason i dug mine was out of nosey-ness, and for roasting for my tea  :P

Cara are my other main crops aswell - tried a couple of roots last week and they were better, and the tops are still going strong. I am tempted to dig mine soon to prevent to much slug damage - especially as the rain has now returned.

Mine are still standing despite the drought and blight, I lifted one plant and had a tiny yield but the spuds were about cricket ball sized and larger (desiree).

I am off on holiday for the rest of August on Thursday, I am debating whether I should remove the haulms before I depart.
