I've just picked and cut what I now think is a pumpkin.   (Used the wrong pen to write labels and info has been washed off with the rain!!!)
It's dark green with creamy white streaks but I don't think it is ripe.    Is this how they look before they turn orange?    Next question is - can I still use it for cooking or is it destined for the compost bin?

Sounds more like a marrow, but there's not that much difference.... you can eat the flesh at any stage... roasted or fried/sauted, in soup choices are almost endless. If it is a good size it will ripen off the plant and turn colour...

Thanks Saddad.....Just wanted to make sure I didn't cause any upset tummies!!

Sounds like a marrow. Although if it was pale green it could be a butternut.
My butternut squash is pale green with white stripes at the moment. They will turn yellow/orange colour when ripe.

I once made a mistake of harvesting a butternut squash too early. It tasted almost same as marrow. You shouldn't get upset tummies from eating them though!

My pumpkins started off a dark green colour but are gradually becoming orange as they ripen.
