I bought some radicchio plants from the garden centre and they have been in about 6-8 weeks and were looking fantastic. My 12 year old son has been taking special care of them keeping them watered but now they have bolted probably because of the hot weather. i have another lot of seedlings from the garden centre has anyone grown them successfully have have any tips other than keep them water. Does shading them help? Would they have been better being sown from seed directly into the ground.
Also as they are just chicory and i know chicory grows again if you cut it down to the base if I do this to the radicchio will it grow back...I guess it's worth a try as it's already bolted.

The seedlings may have been stressed at the garden centre in the hot weather. If you and your son would like to try growing from seed, send me a pm with your addy and I'll post you some mixed radiccio, so he can take special care of them from scratch ;D
And yes, try cutting down - nothing to lose :-\

Thanks Superspout. I think I already have some seed but I saw them at the garden centre and thought I'd get a head start. You are probably right about them being stressed at the garden centre. They're not easy to water in those plastic trays the water hits the leaves and bounces back out. I found i had to water them quite carefully to get the water to the soil. I let you know if I can't find my seeds.
