Hope somebody can help,

I have a small fig tree that I have put stright into the garden for a little growth spurt (I want it to fruit) and have decided that if it gets much bigger it will be hard to put in a pot.  It is now about 3' high and this year has made it's first little branches but it still a beautiful standard shape.  When is the best time to put it into a pot and what size pot do you think I should get as I don't want to move it too often but believe the like their roots contained in order to fruit.

Any tips or advise most welcome.

Thanks

I`m guessing as my fig is in a greenhouse. Pot up?-late Autumn? Size of pot-as big as you can move if you are thinking of bringing it in over the winter.

Well, suppose the size of the pot for the fig does depend on how big you want it to be overall. If you visit Audley End gardens, in Saffron Walden, they have figs in pots there and I guess the pots can't be more than 45 cm. Many were bearing fruit when I saw them recently.

They have potted figs at West Dean in pots about 2 foot across and quite deep, but I have never seen that many figs on them. Can't you leave it in the ground? I have 2 fig trees growing up against walls where it is dry and stony, and they are immensely productive.

When I had to move house and couldn't take my lovely fig with me, I took cuttings, and my current two are the result, about 7 years old.
