Raspberry canes

Hi, I'm new to this site and relatively new to gardening - but really enjoying both.

Last autumn I dug up some spare raspberry canes from my mother's garden (where raspberries have always grown very well) and planted them in my garden the next day.  I plant approx 25 canes, and cut them back to about a foot - 18 inches tall.  However, only 2 or 3 have shown any signs of growth and this is limited to a few shoots or about 4 - 5 inches.

The raspberries are the summer fruiting type, but I don't know the name as the original canes were planted in my mother's garden about 20 years ago.

What did I do wrong?

What should I do next?

If you took the main canes rather than new runners they wouldn't transplant well. I would start again with Autumn Bliss, you can't cut out the wrong canes cos they fruit on this years canes and you cut them all down in winter!

You ask what you did wrong - well, the new growth on summer fruiting ones shouldn't be cut down in autumn, so really, you probably cut down all the stems that would have fruited this year, along with the old stems.  :) Have a look at this previous post on raspberries: http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/joomla/smf/index.php/topic,20159.msg207565.html#msg207565
This year, any new stems that come up from soil level probably won't fruit and should be kept until next year, when they will.
