I wonder if someone can offer some explanation to this query please which I've just received from a friend......

i moved 2 cucumber plants into pots of their own...now the leaves have crumbled and dropped off....not thro lack of water i might add....any idea's?

unfortunately, I've know idea what variety they are or where the two plants were before she moved them - it is possible she'd put them already into a border but has now decided to move them.....believe she's grown them from seed & were in small pots originally - this query came 'out of the blue' to me but I can't get in touch with her now til tomorrow - she's not feeling well and gone to bed!!

would be grateful for any advice/help I can offer her

Cucumber `death` seems to be rampant this year,I`ve lost four,-two were down to a snail-and two from `damping off` I put my losses down to getting careless-which I am not.  I`ve been growing cus for over 20 years and this season seems to be plagued with problems.

I still think it was down to me-but I am starting to think-are the varieties now on sale(at horrific prices -for retail buyers at least) basically over bred and only do well under commercial conditions? I`ll never go back to the days of `Telegraph` but I do miss being able to get the varieties at trade price I could 5 years ago

Move even further back into heritage varieties like Boothby's Blonde or crystal apple, they are much more resiliant, and the seed are cheap @ £1 per 50, and you can save your own!
